THAT WHICH WAS TETHERED

Tethered

Do I have to make it known
That I have suffered?

Wearing it
Like some sixth sorrowful
Mystery

While lover’s lives like cloaks
Caress the stony ground
On which He treads
To cries of exultation

And that which was tethered
In me taut and tense

Is being untied unravelled
And undone

Because He needs to take it
On the downward slope
To hell beyond the Passion

In resolute resign and rising
To a New Jerusalem

PRODIGAL (Sons And Father)

My son kneels
In the mystic’s cave
Eyes intensely shut

I would smooth
His furrowed face
And tell him

That which he
Over-zealously seeks

Cannot be taken
By force nor gained
By might

It is a gift

It is my gift of love
To ache for him
Leaving him

To learn the lesson
In its time and his

Watching him
Wander down dead
Ends

Widening the gap
The silence
Separating us

Feeling his turning
Against me

And I choosing to turn
Away from him

Shaking the dust
Of his path from my feet

Turning them
To a new direction
On a road that is mine

Perhaps when we have walked
The path marked out
For each of us

Our roads and we
Will meet again
In freedom

You Have Gone

O friend of mine
Whom I love

Companion of my soul

You have gone
To the rightful place
Of your belonging

And I to mine

Jet-streaming across the sky
All sign of you has vanished

Still I watch
Across the distance
Between us

It is empty space
And silence

The way of pilgrims
You might say

The truth
So simply said
So painful
